Daniels Design: Magazine Covers for Two Worlds

A Graphic Design II course assignment: design covers for a fictional magazine called Daniels Design, a play on my last name and the word design. Each issue came with its own theme, The Art of Ballet and Wild Modeling, and the same starting point: an ordinary studio or location photo.

The real exercise was adaptation. The brief changed with every issue, so the cover had to change with it: new palette, new atmosphere, new typography.

Concept 01 · The Art of Ballet

Ballet looks effortless, but it is pure control. I took a daytime photo of a dancer in a light blue dress and moved her onto a dark stage, wrapping the movement in red smoke that follows the line of her arms and skirt. The masthead uses a thin geometric sans so it feels as light as the dancer, and the cover line sits low, like a note in a theater program.

A daylight location shot: a strong pose, but cool blue tones, a busy background and no drama.

02 · Smoke study

First test on black. The dancer is isolated and white smoke extends her movement, but the dress gets lost.

03 · Red atmosphere

The smoke turns red to match the dress and a dark floor gives her a stage. Color now tells the story.

04 · Final cover

Masthead, cover line, signature and barcode are added, with the dancer still the hero of the page.

Concept 02 · Wild Modeling

Wild Modeling called for the opposite mood: instinct, mystery and a bit of danger. I started from a clean beauty portrait and painted an owl mask over the face, leaving only the blue eyes and dark lips uncovered. The cover borrows the language of luxury fashion, with a high-contrast serif masthead, rose-gold accents and short, confident cover lines in Spanish. For this issue the masthead was renamed ÉCLAT, to test how far the editorial line could stretch into high fashion.

02 · Owl mask composite

The background goes black and an owl mask is blended onto the face, with the eyes pushed to an icy blue.

Adapting as a Designer

Both covers started from simple photos and ended in very different places. Ballet needed movement and warmth; Wild Modeling needed mystery and contrast. The lesson of the assignment was that a designer’s style is not a fixed look but a way of reading each brief and adapting color, image and type to what the story needs.
